ASHLIE STEGEMANN

My History

I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and met my husband there while pursing my undergraduate degree. We got married and moved to Wilmington, North Carolina after I graduated. I wanted a chance to explore and begin a family in a place that was new and exciting to me. I was drawn to the beach and the peace I felt while there. One of my favorite quotes is from Ralph Waldo Emerson and reads “Live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, drink the wild air.” This is exactly what I prefer to do with my free time, and I have found that escape to the beach is the perfect coping skill for me. My husband and I did move back to Birmingham after five years in Wilmington to pursue a career opportunity for him. We have recently moved back to North Carolina and reside in Surf City with our children. I feel that I am living my dream every day to be in my favorite place with my wonderful family and support system. I strive to continue to explore ways to better myself and aid others in their journey to meet their goals.

My Approach

I believe you are the expert in your own life and therefore practice client-centered therapy. I would like to partner with you on your journey towards healing and self-actualization. You may have experienced hurts in your life that you would like to work through or understand better. You may benefit from assistance with stress management and healthy coping. You may be at a place in your journey where you desire guidance on how to become the best version of yourself. I would like to begin this journey with you wherever you find yourself and we will work towards your goals at a pace that feels comfortable to you.

Are you ready to begin working towards your most fulfilling and satisfying life? You may feel stressed and overwhelmed with the responsibilities of everyday life. You may struggle with really connecting with others in relationships or you may be feeling you are inadequate in some way.

I have worked with clients who have experienced sexual trauma, domestic violence, depression, anxiety, PTSD, self-esteem issues, relationship issues, and eating disorders. I have also worked with clients who wanted to strengthen their communication skills, improve their social support system, and make small and large changes to themselves or their lives. I have helped clients develop and set goals for themselves and explore who they are and where they would like to go in life whether it be personally or professionally.

I have used techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, reality therapy, supportive therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and play therapy. I also use tools such as meditation, mindfulness and EMDR just to name a few. I believe that each client is unique and requires a tailor-made plan specifically suited to their needs. This plan should be flexible and collaborative and should begin with building a strong relationship between client and counselor. I would like to offer you a safe, supportive, confidential space to address any current issues, set measurable and achievable goals, and begin the journey of uncovering your best self.
